Leader Publications Turns a Unique Idea Into a Custom Website Tool for Audience and Advertiser Engagement

Ideas and innovation are not one-size-fits-all. Many publishers lack the technical resources, team, or knowledge to move a unique digital idea forward. A seemingly simple tool may require multiple consultants to launch and implement successfully. Finding the right partner can be a time-consuming job in itself.

Background

Leader Publications is a Missouri-based local news company that publishes four community newspapers and myleaderpaper.com. When they reached out to DODS, they had a clear goal: to give readers a place to find and redeem local advertiser coupons while continuing to draw readers to their site. Advertising manager Katelyn Mary Skaggs wanted a platform her team could manage on its own without relying on outside help.

DODS connected the team with AlignSimple, which provides local media companies with consulting and hands-on support in digital publishing, analytics, platform management, and sales. The partner brought both technical expertise and an understanding of local media to the project. The team knew BLOX, Leader Publications’ CMS, and had worked with the publisher before. That familiarity with both the platform and the staff helped shape a solution around how the team already worked.

The Challenge

“I didn’t need something with a million bells and whistles. I needed something with the five bells and whistles that I needed.” - Katelyn Mary Skaggs

Working with consultants can lead to many different routes and recommendations, even for small projects. What mattered most to Katelyn Mary and Leader Publications was turning the idea into a working tool without creating additional workflows for her small team to manage. Early meetings with AlignSimple helped clarify the scope of the project without a daunting RFP process. The challenge was to build the coupon platform inside Leader Publications’ existing site without diverting its audience away from its site and brand.

For AlignSimple, the technical challenge was right-sizing. Off-the-shelf coupon platforms carried more features than the publisher needed, while a quick AI-generated build would have been fragile inside its CMS. The solution needed to be stable and custom-built to fit the publisher’s site, budget, and staff capacity.

Solution

AlignSimple combined product planning and platform knowledge to turn the publisher’s idea into a tool its staff could easily support and update.

  • Expertise and Planning: AlignSimple paired a product manager with a BLOX-experienced developer. The team worked from Katelyn Mary’s vision to define what the platform needed to do and how it could work within the existing site.

  • A Focused Approach: The initial consulting meeting gave Leader Publications more than enough targeted research and options to move forward. AlignSimple narrowed the scope to a mobile-friendly coupon page and a simple administrative interface, building a prototype early so Leader Publications could respond to something real.

  • Support and Training: Short calls helped build momentum, with each choice made with long-term stability on BLOX in mind. Written documentation and a live walkthrough equipped the staff to run the platform themselves.

Results

  • Quick Turnaround: A working platform demo was ready 16 days after the go-ahead. Within six weeks, the platform was live on the publisher’s site, with staff trained to manage it.

  • Staff Ownership: The team can independently add businesses, locations, logos, coupon images, QR codes, and expiration dates.

  • An Integrated Platform: The coupon platform lives on Leader Publications’ own website at /coupons, with no enterprise license or separate website to host or promote.

  • Measurement for Advertisers: Search, filter, redeem, and print actions are configured to report into the publisher’s analytics, giving the advertising team a way to demonstrate activity to advertisers.

The Impact of the Partnership

“Knowing what’s possible is not the same as knowing what stays stable.” - AlignSimple

For busy teams, knowing how to begin the conversation and navigate a custom solution can be challenging, no matter the size of the project. AlignSimple served as a one-stop solution and a strategic guide to meet the publisher’s unique request within its local news context. They helped Leader Publications narrow down options while bringing manageable solutions to the table. Katelyn Mary put it best: “I told you what I wanted, and you did it.”

Conclusion

When launching any tool or product, simplicity is the path to sustainability. Digital On-Demand Services (DODS) does the work of matching publishers with the right technology partners, removing the complexity around consulting. DODS gives publishers the confidence to move their vision and ideas forward without having to know every technical step to get started.
